چکیده

The simulation of the interaction between macroscopic Alfvén modes and a population of hot ions is one of the challenges in tokamak plasma physics, mainly because of its possible negative impact on the plasma confinement in a future fusion device. The bi-fluid XTOR-2F code [1], using a fully implicit method with an iterative pre-conditioned Newton-Krylov for its solution at every time step has been extended to include one or several ion populations integrated in time by a PIC method. The originality of that code, XTOR-K, is the “exact” integration of the particle trajectories, i.e. resolving their gyro-motion. Both codes, XTOR-2F and XTOR-K, are now operational.

Toroidal simulations of nonlinear thresholds and saturations of classical and neoclassical tearing instabilities

The studies of standard and neoclassical tearing instabilities in experimental tokamak plasmas show that these modes can be a serious problem on the path toward magnetic fusion. A precise understanding of their dynamics therefore is crucial, but requires full toroidal extended magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. Solving this problem is difficult, both from the point of view of the extreme p...

Nonlinear MHD Simulations of Spherical Tokamak and Helical Plasmas

Nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations on relaxation phenomena in a spherical tokamak and a helical plasma, including three-dimensional (3D) equilibrium computations, are executed in full toroidal geometries. For a spherical tokamak, two-step evolution of the medium-n ballooning instabilities and a successive excitation of an internal n=1 crash has been observed. A similar process has ...

Nonlinear Modeling of Kinetic Plasma

Many kinetic plasma instabilities, in quite di erent physical systems, share a genuinely similar mathematical structure near isolated phase-space islands. For this reason, dynamical features such as faster-than-exponential growth of the instability, as well as nonlinear frequency sweeping, are found to be universal. Numerical f methods, which follow the evolution of the (nonlinear) perturbed di...

Transport studies in the MAST spherical tokamak

Spherical tokamaks (STs) provide a challenging regime for the study of turbulent transport in magnetised plasmas, providing an opportunity to test gyrokinetic and MHD fluid turbulence theory under extreme conditions. The strong field curvature at low aspect ratio has an important influence on micro-stability; both aspect ratio and flow-shear affect transport and at high-β, electromagnetic effec...

MHD and Fluid Instabilities at the Plasma Edge in the Presence of a Separatrix and X-Point

The effect of an X-point and separatrix on unstable modes is considered within the context of MHD and fluid models. We begin by reviewing the magnetic flux geometry in the vicinity of the X-point and the effect it has on wave behavior. We then consider fluid models for the edge and SOL plasma based on the reduced Braginskii equations, and subsets thereof. For parameters typical of tokamak bound...
